Charlie Rex
I moved to Durham in 2015 from my hometown of Bedford to undertake a BSc in Natural Sciences, which I completed in 2018. Between 2018 and 2019 I was working towards an MSc(Res) in Polar and Alpine Change at the University of Sheffield. My dissertation projects for these qualifications focussed on the timing, structure and forcing of Quaternary climate shifts using a variety of methodologies including optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and Monte Carlo simulations.
I started my PhD at the University of Glasgow in 2019, developing a new palaeoenvironmental reconstruction for Japan. I will perform stable isotope analysis on biomarkers contained within the Lake Suigetsu varved sediment cores as part of the BECS group. I will also conduct complementary diatom analysis at BGS Keyworth. These proxy data will inform on palaeoenvironmental conditions in Japan over the past 50,000 years. My PhD research will improve current understanding of past environmental change in the mid-latitudes and allow us to compare the timing of climate shifts in Japan to other regions with high-resolution records (such as Greenland).
